Everton club captain Seamus Coleman has explained why the Toffees are retaining an optimistic confidence despite the weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester United making it three losses in a row.
Despite the recent losing streak, the Toffees won their first seven games in the 2020/21 season – a streak which is unmatched in 125 years of Everton history.
Everton currently sit seventh in the league table, although the Toffees are only five points off table-toppers Leicester – a testament to the competitiveness and congestion of the Premier League so far this term.
Coleman is among a host of Everton players who have been called up for international duty over the break and he issued a rallying cry for players and fans alike not to lose faith or get too disheartened despite recent setbacks.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the 32-year-old said:
“I’ve seen enough in the early few games to show we can have a very good season.
“We just need to get that win again and climb up the table.
“When you lose a game, you want to go again as quickly as possible.
“But we’ve got the international break now and hopefully the lads who don’t go away stay fit, and the lads who do get some confidence playing for their countries.
“We’ll come back and be ready for that game against Fulham.”
Coleman remained stoic and defiant in the face of poor results in his statement issued to the club website, saying:
“In football, we have our ups and downs. You’ve got to get over those hurdles.
“I’ve had plenty of ups and downs during my career, but one thing Leighton Baines told me a long time ago was not to get too high and not to get too low about things.
“I think that’s a great piece of advice and that’s something I’ve taken with me.
“When things are going really well, you can’t go away in the clouds and think you’re amazing and when thing aren’t going so well, don’t get too down in the dumps.
“There’s always another game, another training session, to improve and put things right.”

Coleman is certainly a reassuring and articulate observer and displays a commendable resolve and attitude in the face of sporting adversity.
It was a nice touch to reference legendary ex-Toffees defender Baines, with whom he often played at Goodison Park. The Irishman’s attitude will serve him well in the fixtures ahead and hopefully his confidence will radiate throughout the whole squad.
