  • Coleman has played over 400 games, an Everton record in the Premier League.
  • Named club captain in 2019, he has helped them navigate through difficult times.
  • Even at 37 years old, his impact as club captain has been ever-present.

Seamus Coleman has crafted himself a legendary status at Everton, and at just 37-years-old has played, captained, and managed the club.

Having overcome injuries, managerial change, and relegation scraps, the Irish international has been an exemplary player and a true fans’ favourite.

Now in the twilight of his career, Coleman has revealed what legacy he wants to leave as captain for Everton, with his playing days soon to be finished.

Someone who played with respect

In an interview with the Premier League, the defender was asked about his time as captain and what legacy he wants to leave once he has retired.

He said: “I hope people see someone that respected the shirt, respected the people, respected his teammates, respected the managers that they worked for.

“Someone that just gave their all, all of the time and put the club before his own needs.

“And hopefully in years to come, when the club is flying again, they can look back at that tough three-year period, that we all helped stick together, and I was part of that.”

After signing a one-year contract extension last season, Coleman has only played five times this season and struggled to maintain match fitness.

Seamus Coleman’s legacy is one that no Evertonian will forget

It was revealed that Coleman played a part in bringing Moyes back to Everton, and it is actions like this that show how much of an impact he has on the club.

Regardless of whether he is playing a full 90 minutes at right back or managing the team on an interim basis, he has been a true leader and a model Everton captain.

There may be regrets that Coleman did not manage to claim a trophy for the Toffees, but his quality as an individual has been second to none.

In another era, he could have led the Blues to domestic and European glory, but in times when Everton have struggled to register much meaningful success, the Irishman has reached world-class heights – and proven to be the club’s most cost-effective signing.

Coleman’s short-term future is unclear, but no matter his role, his presence around Everton will always be appreciated by fans, players, and coaches.
