David Moyes has loved his Everton return and after guiding them away from the threat of relegation, he has turned them into European hopefuls.
His first spell with the club was a relatively successful one, and he remains the only Everton manager to have reached a cup final since the Toffees last won a trophy in 1995.
Moyes has injected life back into the Blues, and before he confirmed his return to Merseyside, he revealed that two Everton icons gave him a convincing nudge to reprise his role as Everton boss.
Baines and Coleman convinced Moyes to return
In an interview with Jamie Carragher, Moyes told the boyhood Evertonian that former great Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman met the 65-year-old at his house and convinced him to come back.
He said: “There had been a lot of good managers who had been here who had not been able to fix things.
“The one thing I knew I had in my favour was the knowledge of the club, of what the fans here demand and want.
“What happened next was that I got a call from Seamus Coleman, and he and Leighton Baines came to my house.
“They pushed me over the line to come back because they said with what we call in football ‘the small wins’ I could get to galvanise the team.
“That gave me the final nudge I needed.”
David Moyes understood exactly what Everton needed
Everton were a complete mess before Moyes’ return, but having proven his ability to drag the Blues away from relegation, he was the ideal candidate in January of 2025.
He has restored discipline and organisation to the Toffees, and at last, they are no longer treading water.
Moyes has made it no secret that he believes his squad have the quality to achieve European qualification, and compete on the continental stage.
But considering Everton have been so used to scrapping at the bottom of the table, the fact they are battling near the top is remarkable progress.
Europe would be phenomenal, but Moyes restoring a plan and vision into the club will remain one of his finest achievements in his second tenure at Everton.
