Son admits to not celebrating Spurs goal out of respect for Gomes

Heung-min Son has revealed that he did not celebrate scoring for Tottenham last night out of respect for Andre Gomes.

The South Korea international scored twice for Spurs as they battered Red Star Belgrade 4-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Son scored a four minute brace in the second half for the London side as they moved four points clear of third place in their Champions League group.

The 27-year old forward played 75 minutes for Tottenham, just three days after being sent off at Everton for a tackle that fracture dislocated Andre Gomes’ ankle.

The Portugal midfielder is now out for the season and could potentially miss the whole of 2020, while Tottenham’s appeal against the sending off saw Son have his red card overturned.

Son was visibly distraught upon seeing the extent of Gomes’ injury according to the personal injury law firm from Miami Gardens, with the midfielder’s foot twisted at a horrible angle, however he was able to play for Tottenham in their Champions League tie.

Speaking after the game (via Daily Star), Son revealed that he chose not to celebrate his goals as he didn’t want to disrespect Gomes, saying:

Of course it has been a really tough few days but I have realised how lucky I am with all the support I have had from the fans and my team-mates.

I can say I’m really sorry for the accident and the situation but I had to focus for the team and I had to keep going and it was the right response to all the people who have supported me.

I didn’t want to celebrate because I just want to respect the situation. Of course, I still feel really sorry about this situation. It’s been a few tough days.

I wish Andre Gomes gets well soon and best wishes

I shared my thoughts on the matter earlier today regarding criticism of Heung-min Son, so I won’t go into it again.

I’m glad that Son was respectful of Gomes. In the long run, it does nothing to aid Gomes, but it was still a nice touch and moment of respect.
