Troy Deeney has hit back at Everton after the club’s TikTok account poked fun at him earlier this week, branding the response as evidence of how “tinpot” the club is.
Everton’s social media team took aim at Deeney on Sunday following his repeated criticism of Jordan Pickford’s World Cup form, in a post that went down well with supporters at the time.
Deeney has now responded, as shared by talkSPORT, telling the station: “Shows how tinpot their club is.” He also questioned whether the club had nothing better to occupy itself with, joking about whether making memes was now part of the job.
It’s the latest twist in a spat that began with Deeney’s comments on CBS Sports, when he said England “can’t win” the World Cup with Pickford in goal — a line that had needled Evertonians for weeks before the club’s social team decided to respond in kind.
Whether this counts as Deeney doubling down or simply enjoying the attention is up for debate, but it’s unlikely to be the last word.
England’s World Cup exit to Argentina has done little to settle the argument over Pickford’s tournament, and the pundit’s ongoing scepticism about him shows no sign of cooling off — nor, evidently, does Everton’s willingness to chirp back. Which is good.
