Everton predicted XI v Newcastle as Moyes faces Jack Grealish decision

Jack Grealish

David Moyes has several selection decisions to make as Everton host Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup fourth round tonight, but wholesale changes appear unlikely.

Everton have a small squad, and Moyes has stressed the importance of a good cup run, with victory at the Hill Dickinson setting up a quarter-final trip to Fleetwood Town.

How Everton could line up

Jack Grealish missed Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal through illness, and there has been no confirmation that he has fully recovered. If fit, though, we expect Moyes to restore him on the left, with Tyler Dibling handed an opportunity on the opposite flank and Thierno Barry continuing through the middle.

Hayden Hackney could come into midfield alongside Harrison Armstrong, allowing Moyes to freshen up that area while retaining Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall further forward. Dibling also has a strong case for another cup start after impressing against Wolves in the previous round.

Vitalii Mykolenko is another question mark after being forced off at Arsenal. James Garner could therefore continue at left-back, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles coming in on the right alongside James Tarkowski and Jake O’Brien, while Jordan Pickford retains his place in goal.

Predicted Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Maitland-Niles, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Garner; Hackney, Armstrong; Dibling, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish; Barry.

With a place in the last eight at stake, Moyes has little reason to hold too much back. The biggest call may be Grealish, but if the winger has recovered sufficiently from illness, we expect him to start.
