Revealed – How Yerry Mina Tried to Put Off Callum Wilson

Everton’s 2-1 weekend defeat away against Newcastle was marked with notable flashpoints, including Newcastle’s Callum Wilson slotting past Robin Olsen from the penalty spot.

Eagle-eyed viewers on Sky joined pundit Martin Keown in noticing some rather underhand play from Everton’s Yerry Mina after the Colombian appeared to issue a ‘shushing’ motion in the build-up to Wilson’s spot kick. The Newcastle striker commented afterwards the Colombian defender had “tried to get in his head” before the penalty was converted.

Footage shared by Chronicle Live has now revealed the extent of Mina’s off-putting tactics.

When Wilson won the penalty, footage shows Mina making a ‘beeline’ towards the striker to get in his ear – claiming he knew which side of the goal he was going to put the spot kick.

After Mina’s prophetic revelation, he then stalked and lurked menacingly around the striker and had to be separated from Wilson as the Newcastle man prepared to take the penalty.

Having been heckled by the Everton defender throughout the build-up, the striker said he enjoyed the battle.

“Yeah, I told him to be quiet! He was trying to get in my head before the penalty, he kept telling me where I was going to go,” he told Sky Sports via Chronicle Live.

“It was a good battle, that’s what it’s all about. I enjoy that sometimes, pushing each other around and stuff.”

Mina’s antics are somewhat amusing.

Mischief like this is, like it or not, a part of the modern game. Unfortunately for Everton, Wilson converted and then struck again towards the end of the match – sinking the Toffees’ hopes of taking a result. Wilson was a thorough professional and did not rise to Mina’s heckling.

Better luck next time, Yerry.
