The rumours linking Brazilian right-back Emerson to Everton are ‘made up’ and an attempt to destabilise Real Betis ahead of their clash with Barcelona this weekend, according to Estadio Deportivo via Sport Witness.
The Spanish media outlet claimed that rumours linking him with Everton and AC Milan are essentially malicious and an example of underhandedness. Emerson was linked with a move to Goodison Park ‘on several occasions’ over the summer in order to provide competition for club captain Seamus Coleman.
Instead, funds were diverted elsewhere and Jonjoe Kenny was retained as he returned from Schalke following his loan spell, being used by the Toffees to fulfil the backup role to the Irishman.
Estadio Deportivo insisted that reports in England linking the Barcelona-owned Betis player are ‘all made up’. They added that, as an important match approaches for both clubs, information about Betis’ players or about a ‘team or a third party’ intending to try and sign them appearing ‘as if by magic’ is nothing more than an attempt to ‘destabilise and distract’ the Seville-based club.

Unfortunately for Everton fans, this scathing rebuttal of the Emerson rumours seems to pour cold water on an exciting link to the Brazilian right-back.
The report suggested there may be some basis of truth to the rumours but rather questioned the timing, given that the winter transfer window is not set to open for another two months.
Nonetheless, it may be worth cooling any excitement for now until the window opens again in January.
