- England midfielder’s rejuvenated his career after making move to Everton.
Pep Guardiola has addressed the future of Jack Grealish ahead of Manchester City’s visit to Everton on Monday night.
The 30‑year‑old midfielder moved to Hill Dickinson Stadium on loan last August and was enjoying a brilliant spell before a foot fracture ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
During his lively time at Everton, Grealish scored two goals and six assists, and his performances made him a fan favourite. The loan move rejuvenated his career and Jack Grealish looked like a threat every time he was with the ball.
With his loan set to expire, speculation has grown over whether he will return to Manchester City or sign permanently with Everton. Guardiola’s latest comments suggest the decision rests largely with the player himself.
Pep Guardiola acknowledges Jack Grealish impact at Everton
Speaking to reporters ahead of the City game against Everton, Guardiola was asked about Grealish’s future. “I don’t know. I want the best for Jack,” he said. “I know the impact [at Everton] was really good, playing the minutes that he had in the treble season. The Treble season [he] was extraordinary and after that maybe I didn’t help him or maybe we couldn’t reach the level that he had.”
The City manager acknowledged that Grealish needs regular football. That regular football is something he found at Everton. “And he needs [to play] game, game, game and Everton [he] had [that]. Unfortunately the injury, but hopefully he can recover and next season can continue to play.”
‘It depends absolutely on him’
Guardiola made clear that Grealish’s quality is not in question. “It depends on him. It depends absolutely on him. The quality is no doubt, everything is there.”
Guardiola’s comments suggest that if Jack Grealish wants to return and fight for his place, that option also exists. But the tone suggests that City are unlikely to block a move as they would like to recoup some money from the massive fees they paid to Aston Villa.
What this means for Everton
Everton have been linked with a permanent transfer for the midfielder. The player has settled well on Merseyside, and his relationship with David Moyes has been key to his resurgence. The club are believed to be willing to spend around £20m to sign him permanently.
Grealish’s statistics before his injury, with two goals and six assists, were decent. But more than that, his impact on the whole team was clearly visible. Since his injury, Everton have lacked creativity in wide areas. His return would be a major boost for next season, especially if European football is secured.
After the reception and love he has received at Everton since his move, it would be no surprise if he chooses to remain in royal blue.
