Reece Welch wanted by Horsens and Sheffield Wednesday after Everton departure

Former Everton defender Reece Welch is attracting interest from Danish side Horsens and Sheffield Wednesday following his departure from the club this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Welch became a free agent after Everton confirmed he would leave the club at the end of his contract, bringing an end to a lengthy association with the Blues that began in the academy system.

The centre-back was regarded as one of the club’s more promising youth prospects during his development years and captained Everton at youth level, but opportunities in the senior side proved limited.

Now, a return to the game appears to be edging closer.

According to a tweet this afternoon from Pete O’Rourke, both Horsens and Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing the 21-year-old on a free transfer as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.

Supporters can follow the latest developments involving former and current Blues via Everton’s transfer pages.

Next move approaching for former Everton prospect

Welch leaves Everton having made his senior debut under Frank Lampard and spent time around the first-team squad during a period of significant transition at the club.

Although he was unable to establish himself as a regular Premier League option, the defender remains highly regarded and is still at an age where regular first-team football could accelerate his development.

A move to Sheffield Wednesday would keep him in English football, while Horsens could offer an alternative route through the Danish game.

For now, no agreement has been announced, but interest from both clubs suggests Welch may not be without options for long as he looks to take the next step in his career.
