Moyes makes telling admission after Friedkins open door to Everton sale

David Moyes has admitted he was surprised by The Friedkin Group’s decision to explore a potential sale of Everton, but conceded that perhaps he should have seen it coming.

TFG announced on Friday that it is considering new investment options, including the sale of its controlling interest in the club. The news comes less than two years after the group completed its takeover from Farhad Moshiri.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against Hull City, Moyes revealed that he only learned of the development on Friday morning.

“I truly believed with new ownership we were in it completely,” Moyes said. “It has been a difficult summer for us. I only found out this morning. Maybe I am a little bit surprised, but maybe I shouldn’t be that surprised.”

Moyes admits surprise at Friedkin decision

It has been a frustrating few months for Moyes, particularly during a summer transfer window which left him short of some of the additions he wanted.

Everton sold Iliman Ndiaye and Beto but did not bring in another striker before the deadline. Moyes also revealed last month that he had not spoken directly to Dan Friedkin since returning to the club in January 2025.

The Everton manager had expected the Friedkins to be around for the long haul, saying on Friday that he thought they could remain at the club for another “20, 30 years”.

Another possible ownership change now hangs over Everton, although Moyes will have little say in what happens next. His job is to deal with matters on the pitch, starting with Sunday’s trip to Hull.
