Everton news: Branthwaite boost, Grealish doubts and Barry burglary

Everton’s attention has quickly returned to the Premier League after Thursday night’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle at the Hill Dickinson.

David Moyes has provided an encouraging update on Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of Monday’s rematch at St James’ Park, while Jack Grealish’s absence from the cup win continues to generate discussion. There has also been distressing news involving Thierno Barry following his goal and assist on Thursday.

Branthwaite expected back for Newcastle

Moyes expects Branthwaite to be available on Monday after the defender missed Everton’s past two matches while following concussion protocols. The England international sat out the defeat at Arsenal and Thursday’s cup tie, with Jake O’Brien partnering James Tarkowski against Newcastle.

Moyes said Branthwaite should now have recovered and completed the required return-to-play timescale. Everton also appear to have come through Thursday’s game without any fresh injury problems, although the players will continue to be assessed during the short turnaround.

Grealish situation remains in focus

Grealish was left out of Thursday’s squad following a breach of club discipline, with Moyes backing the club’s decision after the game. The manager also spoke about the standards expected of his players on and off the pitch, although he would not say whether the winger will return on Monday.

A separate report from the Daily Mail has since claimed Moyes had reservations about bringing Grealish back for a second loan spell last summer. The report says Everton’s owners were keen on another deal following his popular first season on Merseyside, while Moyes had concerns over discipline within a relatively small squad.

Barry’s cup night overshadowed

Barry had one of his best nights in an Everton shirt against Newcastle, setting up Hayden Hackney’s first goal for the club before scoring the third himself. His performance helped Moyes’ side reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where League One Fleetwood Town await.

The evening was subsequently overshadowed by reports that Barry’s home had been burgled while he and his partner were at the match. His partner described the incident on social media as “extremely distressing and violating”, appealed for information and confirmed that a financial reward was being offered.

Newcastle win followed by quick rematch

Everton’s cup performance provided a welcome response to successive 2-0 Premier League defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal. Goals from James Garner, Hackney and Barry secured a 3-1 victory, although some supporters watching from home were left unimpressed by the television coverage.

Sky Sports showed the tie through Sky Sports+, with no presenter or punditry team at the Hill Dickinson and commentary delivered remotely. The Guardian also criticised aspects of the broadcast during its live coverage of the game.

Everton now have little time to dwell on the result, with the same opponents waiting at St James’ Park on Monday. Branthwaite should be back, Grealish’s availability remains unclear and Moyes has already warned that facing Newcastle on their own ground will present a different challenge.
