Everton managed to strengthen some significant areas of their squad during the recent summer transfer window.
Players such as Conor Coady and James Tarkowski have added some defensive depth to Frank Lampard’s squad, whereas players like Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gana Gueye have strengthened the midfield.
Then, figures such as Neal Maupay and Dwight McNeil have given the Toffees boss extra options in attack.
One player that was linked with a move to Goodison Park that the Merseyside club ultimately didn’t sign, which we feel was a mistake from them, is Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz.
With 136 senior appearances under his belt for the Lancashire club, the Chile international has found the net 35 times and provided 13 assists in the process.
This season has seen the 23-year-old score four goals and supply one assist in eight league games, predominant playing on the left-hand side of the pitch.
To further highlight how dangerous he is in front of goal, only three other players in the division have had more attempts at goal than the Blackburn star (25), who has been hailed as an “extraordinary” player in the past by Tony Mowbray.
Putting that into perspective, no Everton player has managed to have the same number of shots at goal in the Premier League this season than Brereton Diaz, which shows how much Lampard needs a player like him in his ranks.
In fact, the Toffees currently have the lowest rate for goals per shot on target (0.04) in the top flight, which suggests that having a player like the Chilean in their squad who can play across different attacking positions could have made them a much deadlier side in front of goal.
With all of that in mind, and the fact that Everton have yet to score more than one goal in a game in the league so far this season, securing a late summer deal for Brereton Diaz should have been the Toffees’ number one priority, as he clearly has the ability to provide an extra attacking dynamic to Lampard.
