For the majority of this season, Everton have boasted a strong defensive line.
With 11 clean sheets in the Premier League, they have put in some credible performances at the back, but the Toffees’ past two games have spotlighted weaknesses in their back four.
Two of their last four conceded goals have come from corners, and Callum Wilson’s winner against the Blues showed complete disorganisation amongst their defensive unit.
In an effort to seal up his defence, David Moyes reportedly has an interest in an experienced Italian centre back.
Everton are interested in Federico Gatti
Everton have an interest in Juventus centre half, Federico Gatti, according to Tuttosport.
AC Milan have also been heavily linked to the Italian, so the Toffees would face some strong competition for the 27-year-old.
Despite interest from clubs, Gatti signed a new contract with Juve last summer, which runs out in 2030, but his side could sell him to finance their spending ahead of the transfer window.
The Italian has featured 25 times in all competitions for the Turin-based outfit this season and has amassed an impressive goal tally of four.
Before moving to the Italian giants, Gatti worked his way up the pyramid in his native country and has amazingly made an appearance in the top six divisions of Italy.
Is there room in the Everton squad for Federico Gatti?
Gatti is no doubt a talent and his vast experience would make him a very handy addition to Moyes’ team, but the Toffees already have four first-team centre backs.
In a fully fit squad, Jake O’Brien and Jarrad Branthwaite appear to be the most promising defensive duo, but James Tarkowski and Michael Keane remain in the manager’s good books, so the addition of a fifth centre half would seem pointless.
Everton would be better directing their funds towards a new full back, with both the right and left sides of their defence requiring immediate attention.
It remains unclear as to what positions on the pitch Moyes would like to strengthen, and with the plans to spend big this summer, there is a possibility that the Toffees can upgrade their full backs and recruit another quality centre back, such as Gatti.
