A remarkable statistic surrounding Everton’s long wait for success has resurfaced after David Moyes’ side reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
ESPN UK highlighted that Everton are the only club among the current 92 Premier League and EFL sides not to have celebrated either a senior first-team trophy or promotion this century. It is a statistic Read Everton previously highlighted, although the promotion part comes with some important context.
Everton wait stands alone among 92 clubs
Everton have spent the entire Premier League era in the top flight and have not been relegated since 1951. After returning to the First Division in 1954, they have remained there ever since, meaning promotion has simply not been available to them during the period covered by ESPN’s statistic.
That distinction matters because plenty of clubs among the current 92 have enjoyed promotion rather than winning major silverware. Everton’s continued presence at the highest level has therefore contributed to them standing alone in this particular comparison.
The trophy drought is different. Everton’s last major honour remains the 1995 FA Cup, when Paul Rideout scored the winner against Manchester United at Wembley, with the Charity Shield following later that year.
More than three decades have passed without another senior trophy, but Thursday’s 3-1 victory over Newcastle has provided another opportunity. Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry took Moyes’ side into the last eight of the Carabao Cup and set up a trip to League One Fleetwood Town.
Fleetwood have already eliminated Arsenal, and Moyes was quick to show respect for Everton’s quarter-final opponents. The Toffees have never won the League Cup, finishing runners-up in 1977 and 1984, but are now one victory away from the semi-finals.
Everton’s uninterrupted top-flight status helps to explain the 92-club statistic. Their wait for a trophy needs no such qualification, and this season’s Carabao Cup run has given them another chance to end it.
