Everton handed John Brooks for Newcastle clash as remarkable winless record continues

Everton will have an unwanted piece of history hanging over Monday night’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United after John Brooks was appointed as referee.

The Blues have never won a Premier League game with Brooks in charge, a sequence stretching back to his first Everton league appointment in January 2022. Monday’s meeting at St James’ Park will provide another opportunity to end that unusual run.

Everton still searching for first league win under Brooks

Brooks has refereed 14 Everton matches in the Premier League, with the Blues recording six draws and eight defeats. That gives them a win rate of zero under the official, although the statistic is simply a record of results rather than evidence that refereeing decisions have been responsible for the sequence.

Everton’s wider record with Brooks is no better. Tony Scott highlighted that the Blues have gone 16 matches without victory across all competitions when he has been in charge, making Monday’s appointment particularly eye-catching given the length of the run.

Brooks will be assisted by Nick Greenhalgh and Steve Meredith at St James’ Park, with Bobby Madley named as fourth official. Paul Howard will be on VAR duty alongside assistant VAR Stuart Burt.

The fixture comes only four days after Newcastle visit the Hill Dickinson for Thursday night’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie. Farai Hallam is the referee for that game, meaning Brooks’ remarkable Everton record applies to the Premier League rematch rather than the cup meeting.

David Moyes’ side will travel north looking to improve on successive league defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal. Breaking their Brooks sequence would therefore carry greater significance than ending an unusual refereeing statistic, with Everton needing to get their Premier League campaign moving again after a difficult couple of results.
