Exclusive: Arsenal outcast needed Everton move claims ex-Toffees striker

Former Everton forward Marcus Bent believes that Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles had to leave Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Maitland-Niles, who was on a short-term loan deal with West Brom last season, was heavily linked with a move away from the Gunners after receiving a lack of game time under manager Mikel Arteta.

Everton were reportedly the favourites to sign him on a loan deal, but the transfer was blocked by Arsenal in the final few days of the window.

The 24-year-old versatile defender, who can also play as a midfielder, took to Instagram to express his discontent over the situation.

He said via his story: “All I wanna do is go where I’m wanted and where I’m gonna play”, which sparked a lot of media attention from fans and football supporters alike.

Former Toffees striker Marcus Bent, spoke exclusively to Read Everton about his thoughts on the matter: “Every player just wants to play football.

“Having that player go out on loan would be a good thing and Arteta could push him to go there. It just depends on whether your head’s right, or whether you want to go or your wages are right.

“Really and truly I think he probably needs to move.”

Maitland-Niles became a regular figure in the Arsenal squad prior to his loan move to West Brom, where several good performances saw him receive an England call-up from Gareth Southgate.

However, inconsistent playing time under Arteta limited his chances on the international stage. Now, the defender may have to wait until January before he sees any further action on the pitch – with reports suggesting that he has been asked to train alone following his transfer saga.
