Silva defends Walcott amid fan criticism

Marco Silva has defended Theo Walcott amid criticism of the Everton winger from the club’s fan base.

The England international has come under fire in recent weeks, having turned in some disappointing performances against Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

Some fans have suggested that the 29-year old be dropped by Silva for the Brighton game on Saturday, while the impressive cameo performances from Ademola Lookman have added fuel to the fire that he should replace the former Arsenal man.

However, Silva has defended Walcott, claiming he doesn’t understand the criticism he has received.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s fixture against the Seagulls, Silva said:

I don’t know what type of criticism is possible.

Not just Theo, in our attack, with the chances we create in some moments we should have done better in the United game but sometimes it’s football.

I have nothing to say about our players.

I have to repeat. Even against Crystal Palace, [Walcott had a] big chance

If you score in that moment the confidence goes higher. Not just with him but all of our forwards.

Theo and all of them have my confidence to play at their level. I’m working with them to improve these things.

Silva also commented on Lookman’s recent run of form, suggesting that the former Charlton Athletic youngster is close to earning himself a first-team starting berth. Silva continued:

He’s pushing. Not just Ademola, but Bernard.

It’s important to have these headaches to decide.
