Everton are set to offer John Stones a new contract but the Englishman will only put pen to paper if the deal involves a release clause, according to the Mirror.
Stones was the subject of a summer-long pursuit from Premier League champions Chelsea, who had four bids rejected by Everton.
Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21-year-old dominated the back pages for much of the transfer window but the Merseysiders never wavered in their stance over the defender.
Stones submitted a transfer request in the last week of the transfer window but it was rejected outright by Everton, who hope their star player will have a change of heart and commit his future to Goodison Park.
The Blues are ready to offer a new deal but the Mirror claim the Barnsley youth graduate will only sign if there is a set fee for his release.
Any contract offer would likely involve a hefty pay-rise for Stones, who many see as a future England captain.
It’ll be interesting to see how this develops, Everton were always going to offer a new contract to Stones after the whole situation from the summer, but with four years left on his current deal the Toffeemen are in a strong position come what may.
