Everton saw numerous players departing the Merseyside club during the summer transfer window.
Some left as free agents (Fabian Delph, Jonjoe Kenny, Cenk Tosun), while Richarlison was sold for a whopping £60m to Tottenham.
In addition to those permanent exits, the Toffees also loaned out several players to clubs elsewhere. One such player who we feel should not have a future at Goodison Park following their current spell away from the club is Andre Gomes.
Everton initially signed the midfielder on a loan from Barcelona in 2018 before securing him on a permanent basis a year later for a reported fee of £22m.
Overall, the 29-year-old – who was picking up £112k-per-week at Goodison Park – has made 100 appearances for the Toffees across all competitions, chipping in with two goals and seven assists.
Last season saw the midfielder make just 14 league appearances for Everton, across which he earned himself a rather disappointing overall performance rating of 6.17/10 from WhoScored, making him one of the lowest-rated players to start more than one league game for the club.
With that in mind, it’s easy to see why the club loaned out the Portuguese midfielder – who has been slammed for his “ridiculous” decision-making for Everton in the past – to Lille during the previous summer transfer window.
Bearing in mind how poor he was last season, and having been deemed surplus to requirements for Frank Lampard over the summer, it doesn’t look good for Gomes’ chances of being a prominent figure in the team from hereon.
Also, with the Toffees bringing in the likes of Amadou Onana and James Garner to enhance their midfield options, it could be argued that the 29-year-old has already been replaced by Lampard at Goodison Park.
Taking all that into account, we feel that once the Portugal midfielder’s loan spell in France comes to an end in the summer, it should then be one of Kevin Thelwell’s priorities to get rid of Gomes on a permanent basis.
