West Brom make contact for Everton defender Martina

West Brom have made contact over a possible deal to sign Cuco Martina before today’s transfer deadline, according to Football Insider.

The 30-year old defender is one of two senior players to have been deemed surplus to requirements by Everton this season, alongside Oumar Niasse, with the Blues hoping to shift both before the 11pm deadline (Liverpool Echo).

Martina hasn’t made a single appearance for Everton this season, only appearing on the bench once when Everton travelled to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in December (Transfermarkt).

Now Football Insider claim that Albion have made contact over a possible deal, while ‘several second tier sides’ have also made contact, according to the report.

Despite this, Paddy Boyland of The Athletic claimed shortly after Football Insider’s story went up that Everton are yet to receive an offer for the full-back.

Given that Martina has only made one match-day squad appearance this season, and he didn’t play in that game, the defender has essentially been a drain on the club’s resources over the past six months.

While he will inevitably leave the club for good in the summer as his contract is set to expire, it would stand to reason that Everton would prefer he leave now, so they don’t end up wasting another six months worth of wages on a player who isn’t likely to make an impact whatsoever on the playing squad.

Martina has accepted a Championship loan in the past, having played 17 times in the English second tier on loan with Stoke City last season (Transfermarkt), and hopefully this will prove to be a deal, if true, that Everton can push through before the deadline.
