Blues confirm Williams transfer

Everton have signed Wales defender Ashley Williams on a three-year deal for a fee thought to be in the region of £9million.

It is likely that the 31-year-old will be brought in to create competition at the back, with John Stones’ move to Manchester City confirmed on Tuesday afternoon in what was a record fee of £47million.

Williams was a part of the Welsh national team that impressed at Euro 2016 and who were only beaten by eventual winners Portugal. Away from international duty, the Welshman has gained respect within the Premier League as one of the divisions better defenders, impressing during his time at Swansea and attracting attention from clubs such as Arsenal.

If the deal goes through, Williams will become the Toffees second major signing in the transfer window after Idrissa Gueye, while deals for Axel Witsel, William Carvalho, Yannick Bolasie and Wilfred Bony are thought to be in discussions. Everton have already signed Maarten Stekelenburg from Fulham earlier on in the transfer window.
