Everton news: Stadium finances, Armstrong future and Sherif report

Questions over Everton’s long-term finances and Harrison Armstrong’s future have dominated Thursday’s news, while a reported disciplinary outcome involving Under-21 striker Martin Sherif has also attracted attention.

There has also been a reminder of the club’s extraordinary wait for silverware, with David Moyes preparing his unbeaten side for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Hull City.

Here is our 7pm round-up of the latest Everton news for Thursday, 8 October.

Stadium finances and Armstrong’s future

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has offered his assessment of the opportunities created by Hill Dickinson Stadium and the transfer spending that might eventually follow.

Speaking to Christopher Beesley of the Liverpool Echo, Maguire suggested that the new ground provides greater financial flexibility, although a projected £60m increase in annual revenue should be regarded as an ambitious target rather than a guaranteed return.

Our analysis of Everton’s new stadium and its implications for transfer spending considered when that additional commercial income might begin to strengthen Moyes’ transfer budget, following a summer in which Everton finished 15th in the Premier League’s net-spending table.

There was also fresh discussion about Harrison Armstrong, whose proposed summer move to Nottingham Forest could have implications for his next contract.

As explored in our examination of Armstrong’s contract situation, a ToffeeWeb opinion piece suggested that Everton may have weakened their negotiating position by showing a willingness to sell the 19-year-old.

Armstrong has since made his England Under-21 debut, and his development has made the question of securing his longer-term future increasingly relevant.

Sherif report and Everton’s trophy drought

Elsewhere, Everton Under-21 striker Martin Sherif has reportedly been fined £5,000 following proceedings relating to the Football Association’s betting regulations.

The FA previously confirmed that Sherif had been charged in connection with 61 bets on football matches between November 2024 and February 2026.

A report on Thursday also claimed that Sherif had spoken to academy players about the dangers of gambling. The reported fine and those discussions have not yet been independently confirmed through a published FA decision.

Another story offered a reminder of Everton’s long wait for success.

Our look at Everton’s 31-year trophy drought examined a statistic highlighted by BBC Sport’s Phil McNulty: among the current 92 Premier League and EFL clubs, Everton are alone in having experienced neither a major trophy triumph nor promotion since 2000.

There is an obvious qualification, given that Everton have remained in the top flight throughout that period. Nevertheless, the comparison underlines how long Evertonians have waited for another major honour.

Hull City preparations

Attention is also turning towards Sunday’s trip to Hull City, where Everton will attempt to extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Moyes’ side have taken nine points from their opening five matches, with their most recent league outing bringing a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

Our Hull City v Everton television and streaming guide has the broadcast details, including the 2pm kick-off and live coverage on Sky Sports Premier League.

Moyes will also be assessing the condition of his returning internationals. The final international break review includes Jordan Pickford’s two England clean sheets, Tyler Dibling’s Under-21 goal and Vitalii Mykolenko’s early return from Ukraine duty.

The manager’s remaining selection questions include whether Christian Norgaard and Merlin Rohl are ready to return. Both are covered in our Everton injury and fitness tracker.

With the international fixtures completed, Moyes can now concentrate on maintaining Everton’s encouraging league start at the MKM Stadium.
