Everton news: Friedkin sale, £800m valuation, Moyes reaction and Hull latest

It has been quite a day at Everton, with The Friedkin Group’s future at the club suddenly dominating the agenda.

The owners have opened the door to a potential sale less than two years after their takeover, an £800m valuation has been reported and David Moyes has admitted the development came as a surprise.

There has still been some football to talk about, with Sunday’s trip to Hull City approaching and Moyes providing an update on Vitalii Mykolenko.

Here is our 7pm round-up of the latest Everton news for Friday, 9 October.

Friedkins open door to Everton sale

The biggest story of the day arrived when The Friedkin Group confirmed they are exploring new investment options, including the potential sale of their controlling interest.

TFG only completed their takeover from Farhad Moshiri in December 2024, but investment bank Moelis & Company has now been appointed to oversee the process.

There is no guarantee that Everton will be sold. The Friedkins remain in control and have said they will continue to support the club while considering their options.

£800m Everton asking price emerges

It didn’t take long for a possible valuation to emerge. Paul Joyce of The Times reports that an asking price of around £800million has been mooted for Everton.

That figure includes approximately £380million of debt, so it is not a case of TFG simply asking for £800m for their stake.

Everton are in a very different position from the club the Friedkins bought, with the move to Hill Dickinson Stadium completed and much of the previous financial uncertainty cleared up. Whether somebody is prepared to meet that valuation is another question.

Moyes reacts as Friedkin ownership comes under scrutiny

Moyes admitted he was surprised by the Friedkins’ decision after revealing that he only learned about it on Friday morning.

The Everton manager said he had expected the owners to remain at the club for another “20, 30 years”, although his admission that perhaps he “shouldn’t be that surprised” after a difficult summer was notable.

There was criticism elsewhere, too. Dominic King argued that Everton supporters and Moyes “deserve better” from the club’s owners, pointing to Dan Friedkin’s lack of direct contact with Moyes and Everton’s problems during the summer transfer window.

Everton could have case after Man City verdict

Away from the ownership story, football finance expert Kieran Maguire discussed what the recent Man City verdict could eventually mean for Everton and other Premier League clubs.

Maguire believes Everton could potentially have grounds to take action if they could demonstrate that City’s breaches directly disadvantaged them in the league table.

There is a long way to go before anything like that becomes a realistic prospect. City have appealed the findings, while any club pursuing a claim would also need to show that it had suffered a measurable loss.

Hull preparations and Mykolenko boost

There is also a game to prepare for, with Moyes taking his unbeaten side to the MKM Stadium on Sunday.

Our Hull City v Everton preview looks at the main talking points ahead of the game and the decisions facing Moyes after the international break.

There was some potentially good news on Friday over Vitalii Mykolenko. The left-back returned early from international duty with Ukraine after picking up a knock, but Moyes says he has “got a chance” of facing Hull.

“The extra day might help,” said the Everton boss, with Sunday’s kick-off giving Mykolenko a little more time to recover.

After a Friday dominated by events away from the pitch, Everton’s attention can finally turn towards Hull and the chance to extend their unbeaten start.
