Former England cricketer, pundit and talkSPORT host Darren Gough has launched a scathing attack on Everton fans for their optimism surrounding Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian tactician was seen as a major coup for the club given his European pedigree with the likes of Napoli, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Milan all oozing off his sporting CV.
Indeed, Everton enjoyed an early ascendency to the apex of the Premier League at the start of Ancelotti’s first full season in the dugout at Goodison Park.
However, their momentum petered out with the Toffees barely mustering a top-half finish.
Ancelotti departed the club earlier last month following an agreement of an undisclosed compensatory package with his former club Real Madrid, with a month-long search for his successor culminating in the appointment of ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
Gough took to the airwaves to taunt Everton fans over the hopes and dreams that surrounding Ancelotti’s appointment:
“I tell you what – what does he need to do to win the fans over? Because I don’t think it’s going to be hard for him to beat 10th-place, 10th-place last year is disgraceful,” Gough said on talkSPORT on Thursday [05:13pm], as quoted by Goodison News.
“How many fans come on last year from Everton at the start of the season and took the micky out of us when we said, ‘listen, they’ll struggle to get into that top-six, it’s not going to be easy’?
“They all came on here and say, ‘I fancy us to win it or definitely get Champions League, it’s Ancelotti, he’s got some top, top players’.
“But I tell you what, it’s not going to be that easy, is it?”

Evertonians had the right to dream.
Ancelotti, much like his successor, boasts several European clubs to his name on his CV and numerous trophies – including Champions League silverware.
Gough’s criticism leans on the benefit of hindsight as a crutch, given the relative disappointment of last season for the Toffees.
