David Moyes wants any future Everton owner to understand the club and its supporters after The Friedkin Group opened the door to a sale.
TFG confirmed on Friday that it is considering new investment options, including selling its controlling interest in Everton. Moyes only learned about the Friedkins’ decision on Friday morning. He has since been asked what he would want from another owner if TFG does sell.
Moyes: ‘Maybe we’ve not had the opportunity’
Speaking about what he wants from any future Everton owner, Moyes said: “I want people who want to come in here and understand the support, how the Club works, the culture here. Maybe we’ve not had the opportunity to explain to the Friedkins what we are or who we are.
“The supporters will always made their voices heard and I’m sure they will again. I hope Evertonians will see somebody who is going to keep steering the ship in the right direction.”
The reference to TFG is notable given the group only completed its takeover in December 2024. Moyes returned to Everton weeks later and has overseen the club’s move into Hill Dickinson Stadium. His suggestion that there may not have been enough opportunity to explain “what we are or who we are” to the owners offers some insight into his relationship with TFG.
Any sale remains at an early stage. An asking price of around £800million, including approximately £380m of debt, has been mooted. Moyes also made sure supporters were part of his answer. Evertonians have played a major role in previous ownership debates and he expects them to make their views known again if prospective buyers emerge.
For Moyes, the requirement is not only about investment. He wants the people running Everton to know the club, its culture and the support they are taking on.
