Deulofeu – I have kept my head

Gerard Deulofeu has opened up about his career so far and responded to claims that he’s believing the hype that’s surrounded him.

Some in Spain have said Deulofeu let the hype that followed him relentlessly in his teenage years go to his head, which subsequently caused him to rest on his laurels and not work on his boundless natural talent.

In an interview with Marca, the La Masia prodigy insisted he will not change his style despite criticism from his homeland and is happy with the relationship he has with Roberto Martinez.

“Everything that has been said about me since I was a little boy didn’t go to my head.” said Deulofeu.

I knew that it was up to me to work hard and train hard. I have kept my head, though it is not ideal when everyone talks about you so much.”

“If you go anywhere and they give you confidence that you’re wanted, you can become unstoppable. If they make you prove yourself… everything is much more complicated.”

The 21-year-old winger, who signed permanently at Goodison Park for around £4million, is yet to start for the Toffeemen this season but enjoyed a half-hour cameo against Swansea City on Saturday and is expected to start against Reading in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening.

Deulofeu is thought of highly within the game but after enduring a difficult loan spell with Sevilla, the no.19 needs to start fulfilling his burgeoning promise.
