Everton confirm Stekelenburg transfer

Everton have signed Fulham keeper Maarten Stekelenburg for a nominal fee on a three-year contract.

The Dutchman was on loan at Southampton last season with then manager Ronald Koeman bringing him into the club. Now, with Koeman manager of Everton, it looks as though the shot-stopper will follow him to Goodison Park.

Stekelenburg, who has played in a World Cup Semi-final, has played for clubs Ajax, Roma, Fulham and Monaco as well as Southampton.

The Toffees were in the market for a goalkeeper following the departure of Tim Howard back to the MLS, but reports suggest the manager will not stop there and he will look to recruit another keeper this month.

With the news, it has been suggested that the manager has called time on Joel Robles’ Everton career. With Stekelenburg brought in as back-up, and a no.1 expected to follow him into the club it would certainly suggest that Koeman has deemed Robles surplus to requirements.

Asmir Begovic, Fraser Forster and Jasper Cillessen are all names that have been mooted as targets as Ronald Koeman looks to implement his stamp on the club.
