Everton in pole position to sign Welbeck – Is he the striker Everton need?

Everton could be set to reunite Theo Walcott with one of his former Arsenal teammates this summer.

According to The Evening Standard, Everton are in pole position to secure a deal to sign Danny Welbeck on a free transfer.

Welbeck is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of next month and the report claims that he wants to stay in the Premier League.

Wolves, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Ham are all also interested in the England international, who has spent most of the current season on the sidelines due to injury.

Is Welbeck the striker Everton need to complete their squad though? Richarlison has often been used as a central striker, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin ending the season as the first choice down the middle.

Richarlison is better down the left and Calvert-Lewin’s return of six goals in 35 Premier League appearances simply is not good enough for where Everton want to be.

Unfortunately, Welbeck is unlikely to be the missing piece of the puzzle either. The forward has never hit double figures for goals in a league season in his career, now 28-years-old, and has only managed to make it to 30 league appearances once – due to persistent injury troubles.

His goal scoring and injury record makes this look like a very risky signing for Everton and one that looks unlikely to propel them to where they want to be – pushing the top six.
