Everton set Premier League high in impressive Newcastle victory

Everton‘s 1-0 win at Newcastle on Monday was notable for more than Thierno Barry’s decisive goal, with one statistic highlighting the physical strength of David Moyes’ side.

Barry struck early in the second half at St James’ Park as the Blues secured their first away league win of the season and moved up to seventh in the Premier League. Everton also came out comfortably on top in their individual battles across the pitch.

Everton dominate duels at Newcastle

Football data analyst Andy Forrester reported that Everton won 67% of all duels during the game, which he said was the highest figure recorded by a team in a Premier League match this season. Other data providers put the percentage slightly lower, but still show a significant advantage for Moyes’ side.

Sky Sports recorded Everton as winning 56 duels compared with Newcastle’s 31, a success rate of 64.4%. The visitors won 31 ground duels to Newcastle’s 18 and were particularly strong in the air, winning 25 aerial duels compared with 13 for the hosts.

Those figures were reflected in a disciplined Everton performance. Newcastle had 17 attempts but managed only two on target, while Everton tested the home goalkeeper five times from 16 efforts.

The Blues also had 30 touches in the Newcastle penalty area, two more than their opponents, despite having slightly less possession. Barry eventually provided the breakthrough in the 49th minute, reacting quickest after Tyrique George’s effort had been saved. Newcastle applied pressure in search of an equaliser, but Everton held on to complete another impressive victory at St James’ Park.

The duel statistics offer another indication of why Moyes’ side were able to leave the north east with all three points.
