Spanish football writer Guillem Balague has defended Everton and their decision to appoint Rafa Benitez as the club’s new manager.
Commenting on his compatriot and his new role, the writer focused heavily on both men’s connection with the city of Liverpool as he wrote in his BBC column.
Balague praised the ‘sense of community’ experienced in Liverpool, elaborating at length on his heartfelt connections to contacts in the city as well as his endearing family roots on Merseyside.
Indeed, Balague confirmed that Benitez was always keen on remaining in England in his next role and revealed that Benitez turned down two separate approaches from his former club Napoli in Italy.
Balague also insisted that Benitez’ love for the city would not be ‘defined by a tribal club divide’, though he did understand the reticence of some Everton fans over the controversial appointment.
The writer also noted Benitez’ outstanding contributions to the wider social fabric of the city.
His wife set up the Montse Benitez Foundation, with the core aim of helping to raise money for local charities with annual funding of less than £15,000.
Set up in 2011, the foundation assisted causes such as Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Hillsborough Families’ Support Group long after Benitez left his post at Liverpool.

Balague’s look back at Benitez’ history with the city is an endearing one that only re-affirms Benitez’ deep connection and love for the city.
The consternation of some sections of the Everton fanbase is understandable given the swift exit in some of his previous roles and his association with the Toffees’ arch-rivals Liverpool.
Conversely, the deal is done and Benitez is the club’s new manager – having just been appointed, acceptance and cautious acquiescence is needed from fans.
The club has shown a degree of bravery in shrugging off concerns in the full belief that Benitez is the man to carry the club forward.
With several titles spanning multiple leagues to his name, his proven track record of success with Europe’s elite offers promise.
