Ian Wright Praises Everton-linked Striker Kasper Dolberg

Ian Wright has praised reported Everton target Kasper Dolberg for his fine form for Denmark at Euro 2020, feeling that the tournament is a moment of ‘redemption’ for the ex-Ajax starlet.

Euros semi-finalists Denmark have made strong use of Dolberg in recent games, with the forward scoring a crucial second goal for the Danes against the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.

His victory-securing strike took his Euros tally to three goals in as many games, with the OGC Nice man in contention to start versus England in Wednesday’s semi-final clash between the two sides.

With 10 goals in 29 games for his country, the 23-year-old has been linked with Everton and Leicester City, according to reports from Calciomercato [via HITC].

Wright was keen to praise Dolberg for his recent international form, drawing upon intense pressure surrounding his potential and comparisons to legendary Dutch ace Marco van Basten.

Speaking to ITV Sport [via HITC], Wright claimed:

“I like Dolberg as a striker. Again, he was somebody that went to Ajax when he was young.

“He started very well. Very good goalscorer. He has good link-up play. In his first season, he had 23 goals and his dad started to talk about him like he’s Van Basten and that didn’t help him.

“But he faces up play. Links up well. And Denmark are off.

“I think it’s redemption for both of these strikers (Patrick Schick and Dolberg) and what people expected from them. And I think this tournament has brought it out of them. I am delighted for them.”

Everton found a consistent scorer in Dominic Calvert-Lewin last season, though a comparative failure for Joshua King to challenge Calvert-Lewin for a major role meant that Everton lacked an alternative striking option.

Richarlison occasionally deputised for his teammate, but Everton could do far worse than Dolberg.

With King out of contract, Calvert-Lewin remains Rafa Benitez’ sole natural striking option – meaning Dolberg could be an ideal replacement to fill the void.
