Kevin Mirallas has struggled within the past two months, and was given a straight red card in the draw against Swansea only minutes after coming on.
The 28-year-old has played only four times this season, scoring one goal in the 5-3 win over Barnsley in the cup. Mirallas was in the squad for the Manchester United game, but was not able to get onto the pitch as Martinez preferred to bring on Gerard Deulofeu late into the game.
The relationship between Mirallas and Roberto Martinez has seemingly crumbled over the past two years, the Belgian revealed broken promises by the manager last January and with the winger finding it hard getting any time on the pitch, that relationship could potentially fall further.
Even with a tarnished relationship, the Catalonian still believes that Mirallas can play a big part of this current squad. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he explained:
Kevin has been unfortunate at the start of the season, with little niggles and then the sending off which was harsh,
Now he’s been working well and I expect Kevin to enjoy a good period.
Kevin is a really important player for us and that will never change.
I expect Kevin to start that momentum and that goalscoring threat he brings is very important for us.
It could be likely that Mirallas will get at least some time on the pitch this weekend, but expect to see him likely start against Norwich in the cup next week. Hopefully Kevin can regain the goalscoring form that Martinez has spoken of.
