Simon Jordan Slams Everton Owner’s Integrity in ‘Ambition’ Rant

Pundit and former club owner Simon Jordan has taken aim at Everton owner Farhad Moshiri for some of the club’s decision-making.

Everton has courted controversy following their landmark decision to appoint ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez as the club’s new manager despite high-profile remonstrations from some Evertonians.

However, former Crystal Palace owner Jordan took aim at the wider decision-making of Moshiri and other club officials, questioning the integrity of Moshiri’s ‘ambition’.

Speaking on talkSPORT [30/06/21 via Goodison News], Jordan declared:

“Everton have got a billion-pound stadium to fund,” he said.

“Farhad Moshiri has got more money than god and has told you he’s got bags of ambition, test that ambition.

“Because I tell you what, ambition doesn’t smell like Alex Iwobi to me, that doesn’t smell like ambition.

“Buying Gylfi Sigurdsson for a massively inflated price doesn’t smell like ambition, it smells like bad business for a good football club that should be doing better than it is.

“Getting your pants taken down by Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t smack of ambition, it smacks of misguided, misdirected ambition.”

Everton are often accused of a ‘Hollywood’ approach to appointments and signings, taking on big-name managers and players that fail to deliver in terms of cut-and-thrust results on and off the pitch.

The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Alex Iwobi certainly fit that mould, costing a combined £79 million.

Yet Iwobi has mustered just 4 goals in 65 Everton outings, with Sigurdsson similarly struggling to live up to his price tag with just 31 goals in 156 games.

The results point more to the achievements of rotational options than flagship signings – and Ancelotti’s legacy at Everton paints a similar picture.

Seen as a major coup given his European pedigree and proven record of delivering success at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, the Italian tactician failed in his ambitions to secure European football for the club.

On and off the pitch, Moshiri’s legacy of decision-making is one of mixed success; positives have shown at times – Everton’s bright start and busy summer window last season is evidence – but Jordan is right to demand better from the club.
