Everton look to be the unlikely beneficiaries of the near collapse of the proposed European Super League following the threat that the ESL would ‘kill’ a major club development.
The Toffees recently secured approval for plans to redevelop the Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool into a state-of-the-art stadium, raising the capacity of the club’s ground to almost 53,000.
At the eye-watering cost of £500 million, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has sanctioned a significant expense in order to develop the crucial element of the club’s infrastructure.
The development represents a forward-thinking component in a long-term plan, with European football remaining at the pinnacle of the vision for the club.
With the ESL project threatening to disrupt the fluidity of clubs between competitions, its closed-shop nature threatened to cap Everton’s potential to progress – undermining the full benefits the new stadium will provide.
That caused one Everton fan channel, Toffee TV, to release a video arguing that the development could ‘kill’ the new stadium although those fears now look to be allayed.
75% of the original 12 ESL clubs have pulled out, leaving Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid as the only committed members (correct as of 21/04/2021, 12:30pm).
The Athletic correspondent Patrick Boyland has noted that the intention of the stadium is to act as a ‘catalyst for a renewed assault on the Champions League places’ – an intention that looks increasingly secure.

Retaining security over the full benefits of the new stadium should come as a massive relief for Everton fans.
At least for now, there looks to be no glass ceiling for Everton’s potential to improve beyond results on the pitch.
