Everton’s newest midfielder, Christian Nørgaard, has explained what won him over about the move to Merseyside.
Nørgaard completed his switch from Arsenal on Wednesday evening, and the Dane wasted no time explaining the thinking behind it. Speaking to the club after the deal was finalised, he pointed to conversations with David Moyes as the turning point.
“When I spoke to David Moyes and others at the club involved in the transfer, I heard about the whole project and I was very intrigued,” Nørgaard said. “Coming here just makes that feeling even stronger.”
The 32-year-old also flagged Everton’s supporters as part of the appeal, having faced them from the opposite end at Brentford for six seasons. “My past experience of playing against Everton: the whole atmosphere, the fans, is something I really look forward to experience as an Everton player. It’s a big, big honour for me.”
Everton have paid around £7m for a player who made just 102 minutes of Premier League football at Arsenal after his move from Brentford last summer, with Mikel Arteta’s side willing to cash in as they push to bring in Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães. That deal is reportedly progressing, with a framework already agreed between the two clubs.
For Moyes, it’s a reunion with a familiar Premier League face — Nørgaard captained Brentford through their rise up the divisions and made close to 200 appearances in west London before his year in north London. Whether he walks straight into the midfield or offers depth behind the incumbents is the next question, and one worth returning to once he’s had a few sessions on the training pitch.
