Everton are closing in on a deal to sign former Spurs, Newcastle and Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend according to a Tweet from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The English right-winger has become a free agent following the expiration of his deal with fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace, with the 30-year-old having spent the summer featuring as a talkSPORT pundit between seasons.

According to the Italian transfer expert Romano, his spell away from the English top flight will be short-lived, with Townsend set to become one of Rafa Benitez’ first signings at Goodison Park.

The versatile attacker – who can also play on the left side – is a 13-cap England international with three goals for his country, though it has been many years since the veteran winger’s last call-up.

He managed 16 goals and 28 assists in a Palace shirt across 185 appearances since his 2016 move from then-relegated side Newcastle.

Although his goal tally is not electrifyingly productive in relation to his appearances for Palace, Townsend offers plenty off the ball. The home-grown talent can inject discipline and experience into Everton’s squad options.

He is noted for his ability to work well with his counterpart on the opposite flank to effectively supply accurate crosses to the striker – a feat that helped Palace striker Christian Benteke to double digits in terms of goals last season.

He was a mainstay under Roy Hodgson for his work rate and defensive all-action displays.

Having worked previously with Rafa Benitez at Newcastle, the tactician will be familiar with what Townsend can bring to the club.
