Four things we learned: Everton 1-2 Manchester United

It was the quintessential hard-luck story that has defined Everton in recent years.

A late, late Anthony Martial goal condemned the Blues to F.A Cup heartbreak after a spirited second half fightback.

Former blue Marouane Fellaini came back to haunt Everton just after the half-hour mark as he guided in a low Martial cross to put Manchester United in front.

It was no more than what they deserved, the Blues were second best throughout the first half and were lucky to be 1-0 down at half-time.

Roberto Martinez’s side came out fighting in the second period and took control of proceedings, Ross Barkley won a penalty after Tim Fosu Mensah tripped him but Romelu Lukaku’s poor effort was saved by David De Gea.

Gerard Deulofeu revitalised Everton’s attack and eventually forced an equaliser with a wicked cross that Chris Smalling could only deflect into his own net.

But eventually, and perhaps inevitably, it all ended in pain for the Blues and the inquest into their shambolic season will now commence.
