David Moyes described Everton as “very, very poor” after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Hull City.
Everton fell behind to Joe Gelhardt early in the second half before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalised and Thierno Barry put the visitors ahead. Mohamed Belloumi levelled for Hull in the 74th minute.
The result keeps Everton unbeaten in the Premier League, but Moyes was unhappy with a performance he felt fell well short of recent displays.
Moyes unhappy with Everton display
The Everton boss expected his team to win after Barry made it 2-1 and was particularly critical of the defending for Hull’s goals.
“It looked really unlike us, the way we gave the goals away today, it was very, very poor.”
Moyes said Everton’s overall performance was “so far below our level” and described the defending as “naive to say the least”.
Everton also had chances to put the game beyond Hull. Barry scored in the second half but missed several opportunities, while Brennan Johnson had a first-half goal ruled out following a VAR review. Dewsbury-Hall was our highest-rated Everton player after scoring the equaliser and setting up Barry.
Moyes was also asked whether the uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership had affected his players.
“I’m not giving the players any room for excuses because of what’s going on, whether that be the transfer window or that be ownership,” he said.
The Friedkin Group announced on Friday that it was exploring new investment options for Everton, including the potential sale of its controlling interest.
Moyes had admitted before the Hull game that he was surprised by the announcement, but he did not accept it as an explanation for the performance.
